Savoy Ball

Friday 1st June – The Savoy

Get your glad rags on and step back in time for a dance in one of New Zealand’s oldest and most beautiful ballrooms. The Midwinter Swing Festival kicks off in the elegant Savoy Ball Room, serenaded by Dunedin’s most jubilant jazz line up, The Rinky Tinky Jingle Jangle Jazz Club. A fun night with games, the chance to meet other festival-goers and be graced with a showcase by swing dance masters; The DecaVitas!

New to dance? Learn to dance with an absolute beginners lesson with local swing dance teachers from 7pm!

Door sales: $40 from 6:30pm (or register in advance)

Swing Dance Competitions

Saturday 2nd June – Toitū

Enjoy an entertaining evening as talented competitors from all over New Zealand showcase their inspirational choreography and improvised performances. Hosted at Toitū Early Settlers Museum, the stunning Josephine Foyer provides the perfect backdrop for showcasing Lindy Hop, Charleston and and Blues dance at its best. If you’re a dancer, then this is your chance to strut your stuff and show us what you’ve got! Not the competitive type? There will be plenty of social dancing between events and entertaining games to keep you on your toes while you show your support. Registrations available with a festival or event ticket. Competitions begin at 7:30pm sharp.

Late night event – The Dog With Two Tails

Competitions are over! Follow the train and come and celebrate with dancing to live music in one of Dunedin’s best jaunts; The Dog With Two Tails. The groovy-blues styles of Dunedin’s very own Hoot will keep the fun going until the small hours of the evening, while you can enjoy the Dog’s great selection of food and drink. Entry included in full passes or with Competition event tickets.

Harbour Hop

Sunday 3rd June – Plato

We head to the other side of the tracks to the Harbour area to check out one of Dunedin’s most popular seafood restaurants; Plato. Check out Dunedin’s iconic waterfront foodbasket and make yourself at home with swing music from the amazing Dunedin City Jazz Orchestra. Enjoy the cosy atmosphere and dance the night away with more games and demonstrations from awesome festival teachers.

Afterparty

The Dunedin City Jazz Orchestra wrap up and you get to experience a fire show! Then we magically transport you to our secret mystery location for the Harbour Hop Afterparty; a perfect late night getaway with the spectacular blues group Hoot!

Dine and Dance: Monday Evening Wind-Down

Monday 4th June –  Etrusco

It’s the end of the festival, but we’d like to ask for just one more dance before you go. Chat to new friends and farewell the old at Etrusco; Dunedin’s finest Italian restaurant. This is your last opportunity to kick up those tired heels before Queen’s Birthday Weekend winds up. Join us for drinks and dancing to a live jazz pianist from 3:30pm until dinner and say goodbye in style!

Dancing: 3:30-6pm (entry included in full festival pass, to attend without a pass please register for dinner, pay during the festival or on the door)
Dinner: 5pm-onward ($30 for dinner, please register by purchasing a ticket from the festival committee in advance).
